I believe a compliment deserves a proper response, ideally one that makes the person giving it wonder if they have started something. A simple thank you is perfectly lovely, of course. I just enjoy adding a little trouble around the edges. If you appreciate a dry remark delivered with warm intentions, we could have plenty to talk about at the club.

My sense of humor tends to arrive quietly. I might let a perfectly sensible conversation continue for a while before slipping in a comment that changes its entire mood. You don't have to catch every little hint. The missed ones give me an excuse to be a bit more direct, which can be entertaining for both of us, too.

Consider this your invitation to judge my intentions for yourself at the club. A hello gives us plenty to work with, although you could try a compliment if you're feeling adventurous. I'm partial to company where a pause feels comfortable and the next remark is worth waiting for. Sometimes the most tempting thing in an exchange is the unfinished thought.
